My musical history goes back to very early in my youth. I can remember that I could get candy and cookies through singing. The first song I think I knew was "When The Swallows Come Back to Capistrano." I was involved in choirs in elementary, middle and high school. Early in my career I was identified as someone with a great voice and great potential, and was encouraged to pursue a singing career in opera. I took voice lessons for a few years. I joind the U.S. Air Force and while there, I formed my first singing group called the Continentals. We were selected to partiacipate in the Air Force show called "Tops In Blue". We toured the northeast and the south before I finally had to leave the show and come out west where I was then discharged. In the early 60's, I was lucky enough, with a singing partner to be recorded by the then famous Jonny Otis. The tune was a great hit in the southern part of the country. We played around the Los Angeles area for a few years I stropped singing for a few years as I got married and had to raise a family. In the 1980's I was transferred tp Sacramento where I worked until I retired. In 1998 I formed another group, Marshal Law with three other players. We began to make a name for the group, appearing at the local blues clubs and festivals. We were selected in 2001 by the Sacramento Blues Society to represent them at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tn. We got to the semi-finals before we lost the competition. In 1995, the Marshal Law Group disbanded. I then formed my present group, Marshal Wilkerson and Smoked Sugar and we have been touring and playing the blues since. We have just recorded our first cd, Marshal Wilkerson and Smoked Sugar. The songs include Woke Up This Morning, The Thrill Is Gone, Shakey Ground, Blow Wind Blow, Don't You Lie to Me. A great tribute to the blues masters. |
